Gay weddings? Is this a joke like the “hot body competition”? Where is the protest? The marching for visibility?

  2. admin says:

one step at a time! there will be a hot body contest with awesome prizes worth over 700rmb, sexy men’s underwear, etc and 2 couples will get married, too.

  3. Jason says:

Glad to hear about Shanghai’s first ever Pride event. “Get married” as in “mock wedding”? It’s good to take “one step at a time”, and it’s good to have all the fun. It’s also good to keep in mind that Gay Pride is really about equality and justice for all - which particularly need to be faught for in China today.

    Best wishes, from Philadelphia, USA.

  4. Ed says:

Good luck with your 1st Pride event! It will be very interesting to see how the community and politicians respond. I wish I could be there for the hot body competition and weddings. : )

Take small and safe steps, but keep moving forward!

    NYC, USA

  5. Congratulations Shanghai!
This is a very important step to make us “invisible” people very visible. Step by step, the homophobia can be destroyed in this very discouraging culture in China.
We must rise above any challenge to insist on our equal protection and respect under any and all conditions on this planet.

  6. Johan says:

When living in China, I remember saying to my boyfriend that I believed one day there was going to be a Pride somewhere in China. He didn’t think China was ready for it.
Well, it is! Congratulations and have the best party ever. (I wish I could be there…)

  7. admin says:

Thanks for all the encouragement! We are super excited about the kick-off event tomorrow. For all those in Shanghai, come by for the film and/or dinner!

PS. We’ll post pics on our website from each event so keep watching the site!

  8. Vlad says:

The gay wedding part sounds depressing to me already…

  9. Vanessa says:

    WOW! CONGRATULATIONS!

May your first pride event be fabulous, memorable, and visible! China needs this!

    With nothing but love,

    Vanessa (Florida, US)

  10. Greg says:

Well done and congratulations on your 1st pride. Removing one brick at a time. Have a great party.

  11. Plushka says:

GO! GO! GO! Shanghai! Good luck to you! Make it a week to remember. The WORLD is with you! Just remember to keep the fun balanced with a thought for the fight for freedom and justice for all. Happy Day!

  12. Saeed says:

    Congratulations!!!
    See you on Saturday!!!

    Have a Great week!!!

  13. IamABC says:

That’s great that an event like this is happening in China and Shanghai being the honored host city. I was just there a month ago being romanced out on the streets of Shanghai. I had no idea it was so open in it’s attitudes towards gay people. I have always heard through the popular media how oppressive it is. The more I visit China the more I come to the realization that propaganda is not exclusivly “Made in China”.

  14. Janie says:

Bravo! Doing something like this in China is a really big deal. For those earlier commenters asking about where’s the protest, where’s the marching for visibility, don’t forget, China is a very different place than others. There are strict laws against gatherings that apply to everyone. And just because people march elsewhere, it doesn’t mean that’s the best way to achieve the kind of visibility and bridging for gay rights in China. From news articles I’ve read, these organizers have lived there for many years. Perhaps they’re in a better situation to judge what works in China. So I say, well done.

  15. Jenn says:

This week has bought visibility to the queer movement - which itself comes in many different shapes and colours - and that is a terrific thing!
Even if this week is not designed by the Chinese queers, it has made the world aware that there are millions and millions of them here, and that it’s not so easy for them to have a voice.

Being gay/queer/lala/tongzhi/msm/bi/curious or friendly is different in every corner of the world and different for Chinese as for foreigners here, and different for those that are out already, to those that are not.

One step at a time! And I think we should all congratulate those involved - both from the LGBT group and the multitudes of local queer groups and local venues that have collaborated to put the week together.

  16. jessica says:

well well gay wedding…sounds great!but i rather marrie my girlfriend on beach but i come and watch…..cant wait!!anyway well done its a big step in china history…also they might not really nknow hahaha.
    c u sat.

  17. Carter says:

    That would be fun!
See all of u guys this pm!

  18. Arthur says:

    Keep fighting!
There is no other way out!

  19. Leng says:

    Congratulations on the event!
I was living in Shanghai for 3 years before and I know that being able to organize an event such as this is a huge and brave task. Everyone should be proud of the organizers.

China is a totally different place from the rest of the world. Ideas need to come in slowly, without asserting or being too ‘in your face’. What you have done is a slow but sure process. We need to be visible as a member of society and not seen as an outcast.

Wish I was in Shanghai during the Pride.

  20. shawn dern says:
